Carter’s Creek is a navigable protected waterway in the Northern Neck Peninsula in Irvington, Virginia. It’s located one mile upstream of the Norris Bridge at Whitestone. The Rappahannock River feeds this deep, picturesque creek allowing boats to easily travel back and forth from home to the Lower Rappahannock. The Rappahannock River eventually runs into the Chesapeake Bay.
Carter’s Creek is rich in history. It was used as a steamboat wharf and in the early 1900s, a shell walkway crossing was constructed to link the town of Irvington to Kilmarnock and Whitestone. The site of the shelled walkway is now the upscale Tides Inn Resort. Many of the buildings in Carter’s Creek are on the National Registry of Historic Places according to the U.S. Department of the Interior Park Services.
