Northern Neck & Chesapeake Bay Weekly Fishing Report Aug.10 - River Bay Realty

Northern Neck & Chesapeake Bay Weekly Fishing Report
Week of August 10, 2025
By Tom Smith – Waterfront Real Estate Specialist | River Bay Realty at Coldwell Banker Elite
Overview
The Northern Neck is in prime form this week. Warm, stable weather and calm morning seas are creating excellent conditions for both inshore and open Bay fishing.
From Potomac River blues and stripers to Bay cobia and Spanish mackerel, plus speckled trout and puppy drum in the Rappahannock, the bite is spread wide. Whether you're a dockside angler, a small-boat explorer, or running the Bay in a center console, August is delivering the goods.
Potomac River – Ragged Point to Coles Point
-
Hot Species: Slot-size stripers, blue catfish, white perch, spot.
-
Where to Fish:
-
Ragged Point ledges for stripers on bucktails at first light.
-
Coles Point grass beds for puppy drum and specks at dawn.
-
Colonial Beach Pier for steady perch and spot action.
-
-
Best Bait: Cut menhaden for cats, bloodworms for perch and spot.
Tom's Tip:
"Work topwater plugs near shoreline structure on the incoming tide for aggressive stripers before the sun clears the treeline."
⚓ Chesapeake Bay – Smith Point to Windmill Point
-
Hot Species: Spanish mackerel, bluefish, cobia, red drum.
-
Where to Fish:
-
Smith Point Light to Buoy 62 for fast-trolled Spanish macks.
-
Windmill Point Bar for sight-casting cobia.
-
-
Best Bait & Gear:
-
Clark spoons with planers for mackerel.
-
Live eels or bucktails for cobia.
-
Tom's Tip:
"The late morning falling tide has been pulling cobia into shallower water—keep a rod ready for a quick cast when you spot them cruising."
Lower Rappahannock – Windmill Point to Urbanna
-
Hot Species: Speckled trout, puppy drum, croaker, white perch.
-
Where to Fish:
-
Parrot Island grass beds for reds and croaker in the evenings.
-
Carters Creek and Greenvale Creek for early morning trout.
-
Urbanna Creek mouth for trout staging on the outgoing tide.
-
-
Best Bait: Shrimp-tipped jigs, soft plastics in shrimp or mullet patterns.
Tom's Tip:
"Quiet approaches matter—drift into position or use your trolling motor to keep from spooking fish in these shallow creeks."
Conditions at a Glance
-
Tides: Incoming tide at sunrise for topwater action; outgoing tide in afternoon for bottom fishing.
-
Winds: SW 5–10 knots through Thursday, shifting NW into the weekend.
-
Water Clarity: Mostly clear with light algae blooms near Windmill Point.
Live Where You Fish
I've spent my life fishing these waters—and helping others find homes that put them right in the middle of it all. Imagine catching your limit, then walking 50 feet to your screened porch overlooking the Bay. That's more than fishing—it's a lifestyle.
If you want direct access to the very spots in this report, I can help you find the right dock, the right view, and the right property.
