Northern Neck & Chesapeake Bay Weekly Fishing Report August 16,2025
Week of August 17, 2025
By Tom Smith – River Bay Realty | FredericksburgAgent.com ⚓
Weekly Overview
Mid-August is delivering classic summer fishing across the Northern Neck and Chesapeake Bay. Warm water temperatures (low 80s) are holding steady, and a series of mild tides paired with calmer winds midweek are setting the stage for excellent fishing conditions. Baitfish schools remain thick around river mouths, and predator species are feeding aggressively at dawn and dusk. Whether you're chasing cobia along the Bay or targeting speckled trout in quiet Rappahannock creeks, this is a prime week to be on the water.
Potomac River — Ragged Point to Coles Point
-
Hot Species: Striped bass, white perch, spot, blue catfish.
-
Action Report:
-
Dawn striper bites continue along Ragged Point ledges on topwater plugs.
-
White perch and spot are providing steady action off Colonial Beach Pier with bloodworms.
-
Catfish anglers are scoring big blues with cut menhaden in 30+ foot holes near Currioman Bay.
-
-
What's New This Week: Slightly cooler nights have stripers more aggressive at first light; perch schools thickened up around shoreline piers.
Tom's Tip:
"Cast small spinners or grass shrimp baits near dock pilings for easy perch action if you're taking kids out this week."
Chesapeake Bay — Smith Point to Windmill Point
-
Target Species: Spanish mackerel, bluefish, cobia, red drum.
-
Action Report:
-
Spanish mackerel trolling is excellent in the 18–25 foot depths from Smith Point Light to Buoy 62; best on the outgoing tide with #1 Clark spoons.
-
Bluefish are mixing in, especially deeper than the mackerel schools — heavier spoons recommended.
-
Cobia catches continue at Windmill Point Bar, especially for anglers sight-casting with live eels on calmer afternoons.
-
-
What's New This Week: Reports of red drum pushing closer to the surface around The Cell and Windmill Point during evening hours.
Tom's Tip:
"Keep binoculars on hand — diving birds are giving away schools of Spanish mackerel and blues almost daily."
Lower Rappahannock River — Windmill Point to Urbanna
-
Hot Species: Speckled trout, puppy drum, croaker, spot.
-
Action Report:
-
Trout fishing is improving in Carters Creek and Parrot Island grass beds on shrimp-tipped jigs.
-
Puppy drum remain active in shallow marsh creeks; popping cork rigs with Gulp shrimp are a top choice.
-
Croaker and spot are reliable off Urbanna Creek during the evening outgoing tide.
-
-
What's New This Week: Some larger speckled trout (18–22 inches) have been reported near dock lights around White Stone after dark.
Tom's Tip:
"This week's mid-evening outgoing tide is perfect for drifting along grass edges quietly — trout and puppy drum are less boat-shy when water's moving."
Conditions Snapshot
-
Tides: Stronger afternoon outgoing tides this week; plan bottom fishing accordingly.
-
Wind: Light SW winds Monday–Thursday, shifting NE into the weekend. Best Bay runs early week.
-
Water: Clear with light algae bloom near Windmill Point, improving by midweek.
The Lifestyle Connection
As a lifelong angler and Northern Neck real estate expert, I know the real joy of fishing here comes from access. Imagine stepping off your deck, dropping a line in at dawn, and being minutes from the same hotspots mentioned above. If a waterfront home on the Rappahannock, Potomac, or Bay is part of your dream, I'd love to help you make it a reality.
